The Art of Kumihimo: Japanese Braiding

Discover the ancient art of Kumihimo in this hands-on, two-hour class! Kumihimo, which means "gathered threads," is a traditional Japanese braiding technique used to create beautiful, intricate cords. In this class, you will learn how to set up a modern braiding disk, map out your fiber patterns, and master the rhythmic movements needed to transform individual strands into a stunning, multi-colored cord.

The class supply kit includes ($10 payable to instructor):

  • a reusable Kumihimo braiding disk,

  • a selection of vibrant threads/cords, beads, and findings to finish your project

Feel free to bring any favorite embroidery floss, satin cords, or small beads you might want to experiment with!

No prior textile or jewelry-making experience required. Leave with your own braiding disk, a completed bracelet or lanyard, and the skills to keep creating at home!

About the Instructor:

Vicki Hammons has never met a fiber art she wouldn't try. Her journey began with fourth-grade macrame and evolved into high school crochet and garment making. While quilting became her primary passion about 25 years ago, she still rotates through knitting, embroidery, kumihimo, and polymer clay.

Under the name VVS Art Quilts, she sells her work at the Irritable Pelican Art Gallery on Tybee Island. When she isn’t crafting, Vicki is usually writing, reading, tackling home improvement projects, or spoiling her four cats and foster dog.
